Just want to document this for Google to pick it up, just in case somebody else has a similar issue. The issue was that my iPhone stopped syncing. There was a variety of errors: timeouts, cannot read disk, hanging forever while syncing or just not recognizing the iPhone after connecting. I tried everything - restoring, reinstalling iTunes, swapping cables, but nothing helped. More mysterious, my iPod synced without problems.
The key to the solution was in the Mac OS X logs: the message
May 13 19:28:54 Jamaica usbmuxd[6182]: MuxInterfacev1Receive Dropping packet. Received 17408, expected 32764 bytes
May 13 19:28:54 Jamaica com.apple.usbmuxd[6182]: usbmuxd[6182]: MuxInterfacev1Receive Dropping packet. Received 17408, expected 32764 bytes
This somehow hinted an USB problem and after I disconnected a SanDisk ImageMate 12 in 1 Card reader the problem was solved.
This is by the way one of those situation where Apple's user friendliness gets into the way of solving an actual problem. None of the error messages displayed in iTunes hinted that there's an issue with USB. Good that's Mac OS X is UNIX and there's always a log to look at.

Thanks so much for posting this! My iPhone wasn't doing a complete sync, even after trying everything you did. I, too, had a USB card reader plugged-in. Unplugging the reader from my computer seems to have fixed the problem. I guess that's what I get for buying a $7 card reader :)
Mine was a $30.00 card reader. I thought this problem has something to do with the specific card reader, but it rather seems to be a Mac OS issue then... Upgrading to 10.5.3 didn't help, btw.
I have had the problem where iTunes just keeps hanging (about 4/5ths of the way through) EVERY time I try to sync my iPhone! I have even gotten a new phone and this one does it also. I read your post and it "sounds" like it would be helpful but I am far from computer savvy enough to understand that. I have never bought any sort of card reader for my MacBook. Is is something I may find installed on my computer? I searched for "SanDisk" and "ImageMate" but nothing was found. Would you happen to have that same help in layman's terms? :) NOTHING has helped so far and I have pretty much given up on help from Mac. Thanks so so much!

Basically the problem was that a memory card reader was connected to the Mac, which caused the USB interface to fail. I take it that you don't have a memory card reader connected, but maybe something else?
I had a similar problem later (http://www.nydiscovery.com/solutions/2008/10/when-the-ipod-hangs-during-syncing.html) when I had to reset the system controller - instructions are on the Apple support site.
A good way to look into this issues is to check the Console application which shows the System logs. Usually you won't understand what is in there, but it gives often a hit what to look for.
Hope this helps a little.
